What do you do if you have an Accident
Car accidents can happen to anyone and the more you drive the more you are likely to be involved in an accident. So what do you do if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in one?
Firstly check to see if you, your passengers if any or the occupants of the other vehicle/vehicles involved are all right. If someone complains of an injury or you can see someone is in need of medical attention call 999 for an ambulance. If emotions are running high once again call 999 for police to attend the scene of the accident. If the police had not attended the scene of the accident it is your legal responsibility to notify them of the accident within four hours. You will also need to inform your insurance company of the accident.
Ensure that you do not admit liability for the cause of the accident even if you think or are accused of being at fault. The issue of liability is for the insurance companies to sort out. To assist the insurance companies in their investigation make a note of how you think the accident took place and the position of the cars and prepare a drawing. It’s always a good idea to keep a note pad and pencil in the glove compartment of your car. Note down the registration numbers of the cars involved and take down the name, address and telephone numbers and insurance company of the other driver/drivers. If you do happen to have a mobile phone and it has a camera facility take a photograph of the scene of the accident showing the position of the vehicles, and also take close up photographs of the damage to your vehicle. Ask around for any witnesses to the accident and take down their names, addresses and telephone numbers as the insurance company may require a written statement if there is difficulty in proving liability.
